Anal Enema

Never underestimate the power of a clean colon.

– Unknown

An anal enema is the injection of fluid into the colon by way of the rectum, traditionally for curative purposes using an instrument called an enema bulb. In Africa, most of the fluids used in enemas contain herbs; these herbs are chosen based on the kind of ailment that is being treated. Many medical practitioners believe that medicine administered through the anal region is more quickly absorbed by the body than the one taken orally.

A greater number of Ghanaian women in the past believed that to be able to conceive, the womb must be washed and rid of any unwanted substance to prepare it to receive a baby and this was done through an herbal enema. Although not scientifically proven how herbal enema helps in conception, the women who practiced it testified to its efficacy.

Enema has been a long-time practice employed by medical practitioners to prepare for medical procedures, improve bowel function, cleanse the colon and free the body of mucus and undigested foods. A few years back, almost every home in Ghana had an enema bulb because it was a common practice for both men and women to cleanse their colon at least, once a month.

Parents made sure to do the same for their children, sometimes it was the first approach when children complained of stomach upset or other bodily discomforts before other medical interventions were sought. Even though it was very effective, the practice seems to be fading away with less concern from the majority.

One may ask why it is even necessary to cleanse the colon when the digestive system is capable of eliminating waste and bacteria from the body. Occasionally, the body is unable to expel its waste matter due to conditions such as indigestion, constipation and our refusal to attend nature’s call when the body demands it.

All these put a lot of pressure on the colon, forcing it to change its cycle which may result in the assimilation of some of these waste products back into the bloodstream causing all kinds of diseases. It therefore becomes imperative that we employ external assistance like enema to help the colon expel these wastes. Extra caution must be taken to avoid infections or a professional should be contacted for the procedure.
